The Lambardi Tower

Surrounded by a vegetation of holm oaks and cypresses, the Lambardi or Lombardi Tower – from its position on high dominates the town and plain below. Together with the Castle of the Knights of Malta it represents one of the symbols of mediaeval Magione. It was built at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries by the Jerusalem Knights, the present day Knights of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

The possession of the Tower of the Pian di Carpine was very important to guarantee or block the flow of foodstuffs heading for Perugia, especially fish coming from the northern shore of Lake Trasimeno. Quadrangular building about thirty meters high, it has an internal structure divided into three floors and two semi planes, with a terrace at the top accessible by stairs or internal lift. It qualifies as a modern exhibition centre, venue of exhibitions and popular temporary events.
