Church of Madonna of the Star

The Madonna of the Star Sanctuary lies just outside the centre. The cult object is a 15th century fresco depicting the “Madonna holding  Baby Jesus” placed in a shrine, next to which in olden times a hospital for pilgrims was built. Legend has it that in 1561, one of the pilgrims who was in the hospital saw, for three consecutive evenings, a very bright star coming to rest above the shrine, to then nestle on the veil of the Madonna where she is represented today.

When the inhabitants of Paciano heard of this miracle, the Church including the aedicule was built, as told in the pictorial cycle inside the sacristy.
