Castle of Montegualandro

Between the Middle ages and the modern age, a system of towers and castles guarded the north-western border of the territory of Perugia. About the ancient main road, on the border between Cortona and Perugia, still stands the Castle of Montegualandro.

Previously mentioned in documents written during first half of the 12th century, the castle was part of the Montemelini family feud up until the first hall of the 17th century, when it was passed over the Count Ranieri. Nearby, the famous Montegualandro Stone was found, which dates back to the archaic age (7th-6th centuries B.C.) and is now preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Perugia.
