Castle of Greppolischieto

Greppolischieto is the smallest and southernmost fraction of the municipality of Piegaro at 657 meters above sea level: a natural terrace overlooking the beauty of the valley and a small fortified medieval jewel.

Along the panoramic road that leads from Piegaro to Greppolischieto, passing through Ponibbiale , it is possible to enjoy a breathtaking view of the valley, among chestnut woods, oaks and pastures, which can be traveled by bicycle, on horseback or on foot, to better appreciate the silence of the nature.

Through the streets of the village
A few decades ago the buildings and palaces were purchased and restored by the stylist Anna Fendi, but the streets and the square, where you can comfortably walk, are owned by the municipality. The characteristic arched underpasses, the courtyards, the well but also the attention to detail and the colorful explosion of flowers present in all corners of the village, offer a suggestive and exciting walk. From the piazza-belvedere, overlooked by the small church of San Lorenzo , you go along the ancient road that passes through the town center, you can see the perimeter walls and the only medieval gate of access, still well preserved. The church with a single nave preserves, in the center of the apse wall, a very particular cave in imitation of that of Lourdes, of considerably reduced dimensions.

Around…
South of the town of Greppolischieto you can admire the immense forest of Serpolla, whose name derives from the widespread presence of thyme, called serpollo in dialect.
