The cast net

Lake Trasimeno Fishing Museum

Term derived from iacŭlum, «something thrown», conical fishing net with a circular opening, already known to the ancient Egyptians: it is thrown into the water by the fisherman who first rotates it in the air to open it up; as the net sinks down, the weighted mouth slowly closes to trap the fish it encounters.
